Types of One Piece Ostomy Pouch

Closed-end pouch

It is designed for one-time usage, which makes it ideal for special occasions and intimate moments. Some people also prefer them for everyday use. There is no draining or clip to worry about. When the pouch is used, users simply remove it, place it into a disposable bag, and discard it.

Drainable pouch

Some people may prefer a rinse-and-reuse drainable pouch. This pouch is drained simply by releasing the clip at the bottom of the pouch, allowing for quick and easy maintenance. There is 2 piece drainable ostomy pouch available for ileostomy and colostomy.

Urostomy Pouch

As with other systems, a urostomy pouch is available in one- and two-piece configurations. But, unlike colostomy/ileostomy systems, urostomy pouch has a drainable tap instead of a clip.

Q: How do you use a disposable catheter?

A: Insert the catheter.
Gently insert the catheter into the urethra opening on the penis. Move the catheter in until urine begins to flow out. Then insert it about 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) more.
Let the urine drain into the container or the toilet.

Q: How long can a latex catheter stay in?

A: There are two types of catheters: Short term catheter: this can remain in the bladder for one month. Long term catheter: this can remain in the bladder for three months.

Q: Which catheter is better, silicone or latex?

A: Silicone is tissue friendly, hypoallergenic, and causes less irritation than latex. Silicone catheters are cuffed with sterile water for use up to 2 weeks; for longer term usage, glycerine solution should be used to avoid fluid diffusion. Patients with a known latex allergy should not be treated with a latex catheter.

Q: What is one piece colostomy bag?

A: A one piece pouching system consists of an ostomy bag and the skin barrier. The skin barrier is attached to the bag as one piece. A two-piece pouching system consists of an ostomy bag and a separate skin barrier, which features a flange or a landing zone. The bag can be attached and detached to the flange as needed.

Q: How often do you change a one-piece colostomy bag?

A: Your nurse will teach you how to care for your ostomy pouch and how to change it. You will need to empty it when it is about 1/3 full, and change it about every 2 to 4 days, or as often as your nurse tells you. After some practice, changing your pouch will get easier.

Q: How do you burp a one piece ostomy bag?

A: Simply grab the bag and stand it up (see pic 2) Be sure to shake all the contents to the bottom, give the bag a gentle squeeze to separate the gas to the top. Open the Velcro and gently unfold the opening to let the gas out slowly. It can be done walking, sitting or lying.
