They, also known as Vacutainers, are sealed tube used to collect blood samples from patients. It consists of a plastic or glass tube with a stopper at one end and a needle attached to the other end. The stopper typically contains a vacuum that helps draw a specific volume of blood into the tube when the needle punctures the patient's vein.

1. EDTA Blood Collection Tubes: used for hematological tests, such as blood cell count, hemoglobin determination, etc. EDTA can bind to calcium ions, thereby inhibiting blood coagulation and keeping blood in an anticoagulant state.

2. Heparin Blood Collection Tubes: used in hematology, biochemistry, immunology, and other tests. Heparin can form complexes with antithrombin, thereby inhibiting blood coagulation.

3. Sodium citrate Blood Collection Tubes: used for coagulation tests, such as prothrombin time, activated partial coagulation time, etc. Sodium citrate binds to calcium ions, thereby inhibiting blood clotting.

4. Sodium fluoride Blood Collection Tubes: used for blood glucose detection. Sodium fluoride can inhibit the activity of glucose enzymes in the blood, thereby maintaining the stability of blood glucose.

1.Composition and Structure of EDTA K2 blood collection tube

EDTA K2 blood collection tube is used in medical laboratories for collecting and preserving blood samples.

EDTA K2 blood collection tube is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or glass materials. The tube is designed to be durable and safe for handling.

The tube is closed with a rubber stopper, often coated with silicone for smooth insertion and removal. The stopper is purple color to indicate that it contains EDTA K2 as the anticoagulant.

The EDTA K2 blood collection tube contains ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in its dipotassium salt form (K2). EDTA K2 acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium ions in the blood, thereby preventing blood from clotting.

The EDTA K2 is usually applied as a spray-dried coating on the inner wall of the tube. This ensures even distribution and prevents dilution of the blood sample.

2.The usage of EDTA K2 blood collection tube

EDTA K2 blood collection tube is primarily used for routine blood tests, including complete blood counts (CBC), hemoglobin measurement, and blood typing.

It is also suitable for tests such as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) measurement. However, they are not recommended for certain tests, such as those involving divalent cations (e.g., calcium, magnesium) or potassium, as EDTA may interfere with these measurements.

3.Sample Handling and Storage

Mixing: After blood collection, the tube should be gently inverted several times (usually 8-10 times) to ensure thorough mixing of the blood with the EDTA K2.

Storage: The collected blood sample can be stored at room temperature for a certain period (e.g., up to 48 hours for some parameters) before testing. However, specific storage conditions may vary depending on the test requirements.

EDTA K2 tubes help prevent hemolysis (rupture of red blood cells) by maintaining the integrity of the blood sample.
